Metal ceilings and soffits in architecture

The fifth wall, in metal.

The ceiling is the surface a room least expects to be beautiful, which is why a metal ceiling makes such an impression. In brass, bronze or stainless, an overhead plane gains warmth, reflection and depth that plaster cannot give, and it ties a space together with the metalwork below it.

A metal ceiling is also a working surface. It carries light, air, sprinklers and sound, and it can be open or closed, flat or sculptural. Used well, it hides the services of a building while showing off its craft.

Types of metal ceiling

Linear, perforated, mesh and panel.

Linear & baffle
Repeated metal blades that give rhythm, direction and an open, breathing plane.
Perforated panel
Punched metal panels that filter light and sound. See perforated metal.
Open mesh
Woven or welded mesh hung as a luminous, semi-transparent ceiling.
Solid panel & soffit
Flat or folded metal panels for a continuous, reflective overhead surface.

Acoustic and service integration

A hard look with a soft performance.

A metal ceiling does not have to be a loud room. Perforated and mesh ceilings backed with an acoustic absorber tame reverberation in lobbies, restaurants and atria, so the surface looks like metal but behaves like a soft ceiling. The open area and the backing are specified to the acoustic target.

The same plane is designed around its services. Lighting, sprinklers, ventilation and detection are integrated with reveals, trims and access panels, so the ceiling stays clean to the eye and serviceable from above. We coordinate the metalwork with the services layout from the start.

Materials and finishes

Brass, bronze and stainless, in any tone.

Metal ceilings can be made in brass, bronze, stainless steel and steel, finished brushed, mirror or patinated. For a fixed, durable colour that resists fingerprints and holds under bright light, we apply PVD coating to a stainless substrate, in any tone from the PVD colour chart. For the warmth and ageing of solid metal overhead, read brass finishes in the Journal.

Bespoke, under one roof

From setting-out to crated panel.

If you are asking whether we make this, the answer is yes. Dekap designs, fabricates and finishes bespoke metal ceilings and soffits in-house, coordinated with lighting and services, finished to an approved sample and documented for contract-grade specification. Metal ceilings FAQ

The questions architects and specifiers ask most.

What is an architectural metal ceiling?

An architectural metal ceiling is a finished overhead surface made from metal panels, linear blades, perforated sheet or mesh, rather than plaster or tile. It carries the look of brass, bronze or stainless, and can integrate lighting, services and acoustics while reading as one considered plane.

What types of metal ceiling are there?

The main types are linear or baffle ceilings of repeated blades, perforated panel ceilings, open metal mesh ceilings, and solid panel ceilings and soffits. Each gives a different rhythm, open area and acoustic behaviour, and each can be made bespoke to a room.

Can a metal ceiling be acoustic?

Yes. A perforated or mesh metal ceiling backed with an acoustic fleece or absorber controls reverberation in lobbies, restaurants and atria, combining a hard metal look with a soft acoustic performance. The open area and backing are specified to the acoustic target.

Which metals and finishes are used for metal ceilings?

Brass, bronze, stainless steel and steel, finished brushed, mirror or patinated, or with PVD colour for a fixed, durable tone. Lighter, warmer metals suit hospitality and feature ceilings; stainless and PVD colour suit high-exposure and high-traffic positions.

Can lighting and services run through a metal ceiling?

Yes. Linear, perforated and mesh ceilings are designed around lighting, sprinklers, ventilation and detection, with integrated reveals, trims and access. We coordinate the metal ceiling with the services layout so the plane stays clean and serviceable.

Does Dekap make bespoke metal ceilings?

Yes. We design, fabricate and finish bespoke metal ceilings and soffits in-house, linear, perforated, mesh and panel, in brass, bronze and stainless with brushed, patinated or PVD-coloured finishes, coordinated with lighting and services and documented for contract-grade specification.
